Car Review : Volvo V60 SD4 SE Lux Nav Driven

In 2009 , Volvo engineer told the company they are being put up for sale by Ford , so they decided to make sure they will have their own machines and platforms . They took a bold decision : in the toddler , six and V8 , there would be nothing greater than 2.0 - liter four- cylinder . Electricity will still exceed 300bhp , belonging to various combinations of the turbo , supercharger and increase power to the car .

Because of this versatile engine family is more compact and lighter than the old multi - cylinder , the new platform will have a small engine bay and absorption accident - better impact . And because these new diesels and petrols all use the same block - shaped , can all use the same set of engine mounting points . This is a great savings for eight machine architecture that they use today .

We do not have a platform yet - launched the new XC90 next fall - but some of the new engine family appeared in the S60 and V60 . Ignore badge confusing : the giveaway is all new 1969cc .
Gasoline , restaurant , labeled T6 and makes 306bhp , is , oo - err , a ' superturbo ' :

supercharger gives sub - 3 , 500rpm take , while the supply of high-end electric turbo . At low and high revs , it reacts quickly and proportionally , the exceptions being the trace of lag at 3,000 rpm . It does not sound brilliant , but hey also the fourth fastest BMW , the 28i . It goes like stink , but traction ( traction control and ) largely continues to rise .

Anyway , the diesel will be the main sellers . Just check the specs above for extraordinary power- economic trade-off of her . Diesel engines tend to get noisier if they are well tuned for performance or extreme economy , and with aluminum blocks tend to be worse . But this new injection technology helps to overcome obstacles on the car . The auto ' box shifts smoothly and anticipate your needs well . But automatic diesel engines tend to feel weak , and this one is no different . Performance -on - paper is more than OK , but I suspect it will be resplendent with the manual .

I want more sparkle in the chassis of the diesel I got this with the steering lifeless and dull in the corner , although compensate by bending ( if sometimes a little shaky , ) rose . Gasoline has an optional lowering springs and feels quite sharp , and the set - up can be optioned in diesel , too .

Paul Horrell

Verdict: Not quite the best driver, but stylish inside and out. Now with tax-busting economy and fine performance.

Stats: 1969cc, 4cyl turbodiesel, FWD, 181bhp, 295lb ft, 74.3mpg, 99g/km CO2, 0-62mph in 7.6secs, 140mph, 1632kg, £32,995
